In the latest stage of our build, we’ve moved on to the crucial second part of our house slab pour. This phase involved adding waffle pods and mesh, essential components in modern slab construction.
What Are Waffle Pods?
Waffle pods are polystyrene blocks that form a grid-like pattern within the slab foundation. These pods create voids that help reduce the amount of concrete needed, making the slab lighter while still providing excellent strength and insulation. The spaces between the pods
allow for better thermal efficiency, keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. The result is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly foundation that’s quickly becoming a standard in Australian construction.
The Mesh and Inspection
After placing the waffle pods, we laid the reinforcing mesh over the top. The mesh is crucial for adding tensile strength to the slab, ensuring it can handle the weight and stress of the building. With everything in place, we passed the mandatory inspection—a critical step that confirms the foundation is ready to bear the load of the structure above.
The Pour
It was a fresh winter morning when the concrete pour began. The concrete pump loomed eerily through the fog, its mechanical arm a welcome sight as it signalled the start of the next phase. As the morning progressed, the sun broke through, and the fog lifted, creating perfect conditions for the pour. Everything went according to plan, and by the end of the day, the slab was set—solid and ready for the next steps.
What’s Next?
With the slab complete, we’ve now moved on to bricking up the front porch and back alfresco areas. These sections are bricked in and ready to be filled with sand ahead of their final pour. We’re particularly excited about these areas, as they will feature a unique brick diamond inlay pattern—a distinctive touch that will add character and craftsmanship to the final look.
Keep an eye out for our next update as we progress with these detailed finishes!
